Rapids on Mars. Satellite image of eroded features in the bedrock of an area in the Kasei Valles canyon system on the surface of Mars, that may have acted as a cataract. On Earth, cataracts are areas where a river's gradient increases enough to create so much turbulence that air becomes incorporated into the water body forming a bubbly current known as whitewater. The features shown here may have had the same effect when water flowed over the region. Imaged by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) satellite.
