MITTEX. chairman of the Executive Committee of the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Tompany,was born in Brighton, Sussex, England, in 1865. When ten years old he came to America and his earlytraining in traction businesa was obtained from the operating departments of steam roads. In 1S96he became assistant superintendent of the electric lines of Milwaukee, Wis., and later became generalsuperintendent. In 1901 he was chosen general superintendent of the International Railway Companywith lines about Buffalo and Niagara Falls, N. Y. In 1905 Mr. Mitten was elected vice president of theInternational system, retaining that position when he became president of the Chicago City RailwaysCompany. In June, 1911, he was elected to his present office in Philadelphia. 15
