The Royal Navy during the Second World War Salerno, 9 September 1943 (Operation Avalanche): In the distance British warships put a terrific supporting bombardment against well established German shore batteries and entrenchments as fighting goes on on the beaches of Salerno Bay. This bombardment continued throughout the bitter fighting since the landings.
