The principles of Painting confidered, fo far asthey relate to Prints,. A Painting, or picture, is diftinguifhedfrom a print only by colouring, and themanner of execution. In other re(pec~ts, thefoundation of beauty is the fame in both ; andwe confider a print, as we do a picture, in adouble light, with regard to the whole, andwith regard to its parts. It may have an agree-able effect as a whole, and yet be very culpablein its parts. It may be likewife the man may make a good appearance on thewhole; though his limbs, examined feparately,may be wanting in exact proportion. His limbson the other hand, may be exactly formed, andyet his perfon, on the whole, may be awkward,and difpleafing.
