The Copper Coast is the local name for the coastal area of County Waterford that extends from the growing village of Stradbally at its western end to the tiny village of Fenor in the east. It is a small, but unique part of Ireland, often unknown even by those who travel through it. Yet the Copper Coast’s unusual history is sufficient important for it to benefit from a new initiative under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) which enabled it to be designated as a Geopark. In basic terms the main rationale of the Geopark is the conservation, sustainable development and management of global areas of Geological importance. An additional consideration is their archaeological and cultural heritage along with their preservation for future generations.
