Therese Schwartze (born 1852) is the daughterof a worthy portrait painter, George Schwartze,who died in 1874. Soon after his death the tal-ented young woman went to Munich and paintedthere for two years under the influence of GabrielMax, Piloty, and especially of Lenbach. Pilotysaid to her: ^* If you were a man you would ac-complish many things; your feminine want of self-confidence will always stand in your light, unlessyou learn how to throw off this timidity, and be-come an independent being.
