9 11 American DC District of Columbia North America Pentagon Pentagon Memorial US Washington DC benches loss losses memorial

After the 9-11 tragedy when an airplane flew into the Pentagon, a memorial was erected to the victims. Each bench represents one of the victims. The benches are facing the pentagon if the victim worked there, and away from the pentagon if the victim was on the airplane. The benches are arranged in rows according to the year of birth of the victims. Under each bench is a tiny reflecting pool through which a light shines each night.
