The Island of tears is a memorial to the war dead from Russia's war with Afghanistan. In the 1990's the mothers of the lost soldiers fund raised to get a memorial to their sons who were conscripted into the Russian army. It is the only memorial to soldiers from Russia/ Belarus who died in that war. The angel statue is weeping as she was unable to save the soldiers.
