The Chapel, Magdalen (Magdalene) College, Cambridge
The College was founded in 1428 by Abbot John Lytlington of Crowland Abbey as a hostel for Benedictine monks and was known as Monks’ Hostel. The name was changed to Buckingham College in honour of its patron the second Duke of Buckingham. Unfortunately, the Duke was executed for high treason in 1483. The college was re-founded by Thomas, Lord Audley in the reign of Henry VIII and given its present name, College of St Mary Magdalene. Lord Audley as the Lord Chancellor presided over the trials of Sir Thomas More, Bishop Fisher, Thomas Cromwell and also some of the redundant wives of Henry VIII. Another benefactor was Sir Christopher Wray, Chief Justice in the 1580s. Its most famous alumnus is the diarist Samuel Pepys, and his library of books and papers is housed in the College’s Pepys Library. Other alumni include Thomas Cranmer who taught in the college, Henry Dunster, first President of Harvard University, the TV presenter Bamber Gascoigne, and C S Lewis, author and theologian The image shows the interior of the chapel.
