Capercaillie. Historical artwork of a male capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) on a branch. This is a large game bird that inhabits the cold forests of northern Eurasia. It can reach a length of up to 90 centimetres, with a wingspan of well over a metre, and an adult male may weigh up to five kilograms. It feeds mainly on berries and shoots. It became extinct in Britain but was reintroduced in the late 19th century. Its numbers recovered significantly, but they declined rapidly at the end of the 20th century, and it is now severely endangered. This artwork was drawn by Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935).
