SOS Amazonia. The Hofplaats, The Hague, The Netherlands. Sunday 1st September, 2019. The Brazilian community of The Hague hold an anti-President Jair Bolsonaro demonstration, in protest of the numerous fires raging at an alarming rate in the Amazon and, the lack of concern expressed by its President. The President has not acknowledged the ecological ramifications of the fires. According to Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (abbreviated to INPE) this year alone has seen a record 72,843 fires and the daily count is rising. This is an 80% increase compared to the year ending 2018. INPE has been monitoring the Amazon region since 2013. The rainforest is often referred to as our planets lungs as it produces 20% of the oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere. © Charles M. Vella/Alamy Live News/Alamy Stock Photo.
