The saying that pood mines are not foundin places desirable for human habitation, like all otherproverbs, is emphasized by exceptions. Among theseare the Engels mine and the Superior mine, two milesbelow it. that together comprise the property of theEngels Copper Mining Co. in the northern part ofPlumas county. California. These mines are about 25miles north of Paxton, a station on the main line of theWestern Pacific; they are reached by a branch line knownas the Indian Valley railroad. Paxton is named afterElmer B. Paxton. who was responsible for the exploita-tion of the property on a large scale and is now generalmanager for the company, whereas the mine itself getsits name from Henry Engels, the father of the brothersnow connected with the enterprise, who was the first todiscover copper ore in the locality.
