William Hay Taliaferro (1895-1973), US parasitologist. Taliaferro studied at the University of Virginia, obtaining his doctorate from Johns Hopkins University in 1918. Much of his research was done with his wife Lucy Graves (married 1919). The Taliaferros specialised in parasitology, using genetic and immunological studies. Taliaferro authored 'The Immunology of Parasitic Infections' (1929). He was Chairman of the Department of Microbiology at the University of Chicago's School of Medicine, Chicago, USA, where he worked for 36 years from 1924 to 1960. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1940. Photographed in 1952.
