Yellow mongoose (Cynictis penicillata) digging in sand. This social mammal inhabits savannah and scrub in southern Africa. It lives in groups in complex burrows, emerging during the day to forage for food. It feeds mainly on insects, but can also take a wide variety of prey, including small mammals, birds and their eggs, reptiles and vegetation. Photographed in the Kalahari regions of South Africa and Botswana.
