Illustration from a history of England published circa 1902. Following defeat at the Battle of Poitiers and his capture by the Black Prince, John was a prisoner in England whilst negotiating a peace accord that resulted in the Treaty of Brétigny. By all accounts he enjoyed a regal lifestyle whilst awaiting payment of ransom. allowed to return to France to raise ransom he voluntarily returned to captivity, dishonoured by the escape of his son as a replacement hostage, Louis of Anjou. He died at the Savoy Palace in April 1364.
