MAYEIELD. Eli Burton Mayfield was born nearPatton, Bollinger County, Mis-souri, Jutlusltj, 1861. He is the sonof Gr. AT. Mayfield and grandson ofStephen Mayfield, a Revolutionarysoldier. His early education was obtainedin the public schools, the Mayfield-Smith Academy at Marble Hill andthe State Normal School at Cape 300 ONE HUNDRED YEARS OP. Girardeau, Mo. He afterwards en-gaged in teaching, both in his na-tive and adjoining counties, andwas an educator of recognized abil-ity. He then entered the Collegeof Physicians and Surgeons of thiscity, and received a diploma fromthat institution March, 1886. Aftergraduating Dr. Mayfield engaged inthe practice of medicine in a sub-urban town, where he soon had alarge and lucrative practice. In 1893 he took a general post-graduate course in New York City,also a special course in surgery,gynecology and diseases of the chest. Dr. Mayfield returned to St. Louisthe same year and located at 4484West Belle place, where be still re-sides. He was appointed assistantsurgeon to the Missouri BaptistSanitarium, a position which heheld until the erection of the May-field Sanitarium in 1896, when hebecame assistant surgeon and housephysician to that institution.
