Electro magnetic coil, dating from around 1860, England. The device has an enamel dial and indicator for altering field strength. It bares the name of Mr. W. H. Halse, professor of medical galvanism. Devices such as such as this one were used in the historical medical discipline of 'galvanism', to cure nervous diseases. Galvanism is the therapeutic application of electric currents to the body to stimulate muscle contraction, it was a popular branch of quack medicine throughout the nineteenth century and its use continued until the early 1900s. Galvinism takes its name from Italian physiologist, Luigi Galvani (1737-98) who discovered that electric currents could affect muscle activity in dissected animals.
