It is not a frequent subject in early art,but is often met with in pictures of the later schools. Josephis asleep in his chair, the angel stands before him, and, witha significant gesture, points forward—arise and flee! There is an exquisite little composition by Titian, called aRiposo, which may possibly represent the preparation for theFlight. (118.) Here Mary is seated under a tree nursing herInfant, while in the background is a sort of rude stable, inwhich Joseph is seen saddling the ass, while the ox is on theoutside. In a composition by Tiarini, we see Joseph holding theInfant, while Mary, leaning one hand on his shoulder, is aboutto mount the ass. In a composition by Poussin, Mary, who has just seated THE FLIGHT INTO EGYPT. 249. 118 Titian. herself on the ass, takes the Child from the arms of angels lead the ass, a third kneels in homage, and twoothers are seen above with the curtain to pitch a tent. I must notice here a tradition that both the ox and theass who stood over the manger at Bethlehem, accompaniedthe Holy Family into Egypt. In Albert Durers print, theox and the ass walk side by side. It is also related that theVirgin was accompanied by Salome, and Joseph by three ofhis sons; but this version of the story is generally rejectedby the painters, though I remember one instance, a littlepicture by Lorenzo Monaco, in which Salome, who hadvowed to attend on Christ and his mother as long; as shelived, is seen following the ass, veiled, and supporting hersteps with a staff. But this is a rare exception. The general treatment con-fines the group to Joseph, the mother, and the Child. ToJose
