The disease known as equine piroplasmosis is one possessing greatimportance to the farming community of certain portions of CapeColony, especially to importers, for the reason that recently importedhorses sometimes develop a very acute and often fatal form of thismalady. A similar disease attacks mules. The recently reportedoutbreak of piroplasmosis amongst donkeys in the Transvaal, if notidentical, is probably very closely allied to the malady affecting horsesand mules. A great mortality amongst donkeys at Lydenburg wasdue to piroplasmosis. Equine piroplasmosis requires further investiga-tion, it being unknown how the disease is disseminated, although mostauthorities consider that the parasite is transmitted by the agencyof a tick.
