It will be seen that the fathers held firmlyto the view that the education of candidatesshould be conducted under the direction ofthe Church, and that they were determinedto secure, if possible, these three things, piety,learning, practical efficiency. The scheme of the Presbytery of Newcas-tle outlined above as devised in 1771, waspursued under direction of synod forseveral years; but unhappily the War ofthe Revolution broke over the colonies, andthe work undertaken suffered a seriousinterruption. But- in time the war ended,and the Church grew and prospered. The. synod was resolved into several bodies, anda General Assembly was constituted as thehighest court of the Church. The comingtogether of the First General Assembly,May, 1789, in the Second Church, Phila-delphia, constitutes an important epoch inour ecclesiastical history and of our greatbenevolent operations. As early as 1805and 1806, the General Assembly calledupon every presbytery to use their utmostendeavors to increase by all suitable meansin their power the number of promisingcandidates for the holy ministry . to makevigorous exertions to raise funds to assist allthe youth that may need assistance . toinspect the education of these youths duringthe course of both their academical and theirtheological studies, choosing for them such^ schools, sem- ! •*»*
