Dunnottar Castle near Aberdeen in North East Scotland is a ruined medieval cliff top fortress on a rocky outcrop just off the shore about 3km or 2 miles south of the town of Stonehaven. It is a major Scottish tourist site and is open to the public. The history of the castle goes back to the 5th century and it has been visited by many important figures from Scottish and English history up until the 1715 Jacobite rebellion. More recently it has been partially restored.
