Retired Sgt. 1st Class Paul Biery, who retired after 23 years of service in the Army to Columbia, , stops on the pier at Semmes Lake to survey the damage done when the dam collapsed after a historic two days of rainfall totaling 24 inches. Biery, who has been coming off and on to Semmes Lake since 1980 to feed the ducks a few pieces of bread, originally attended basic combat training at Fort Jackson in 1957 and said he had never experienced a rain as heavy as the one on Oct. 3 and 4.
