Open terrace at a traditional Iban tribal longhouse near Kapit along the Rejang River Sarawak Malaysia

The tribal peoples of Borneo traditionally live in longhouses, an entire village consisting of a single long building, raised on stilts and divided into separate family living quarters. This is still the normal way of living for the rural tribal people, though increasingly the longhouses are built of concrete instead of wood. This image shows the veranda of a traditional Iban longhouse, still made of wood, in countryside near Kapit, deep in the heart of Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo.
