Student accommodation in Liverpool, Merseyside, UK 21st March, 2015. 40m-tall red Tower crane that has been used on the building site of a major complex built by Nordic Construction being removed. The site at Hope Street is a student centre that will include 339 bedrooms, a gym, cinema, bars and restaurants. The crane is being dismantled with an even bigger 750 ton Luffer Crane with hydraulic luffing jibs, (used in tight urban work spaces when there is insufficient clearance for the jib to rotate), one of the biggest cranes of its type in Europe and one of only three in the UK.
"The 40m-tall red crane has been used on the building site of a major student accommodation complex on the junction of Myrtle Street and Hope Street. It will be dismantled piece by piece on Saturday and Sunday - with an even bigger 750 ton. Luffer Crane being used to help remove it. From 7pm tonight Hope Street, from Myrtle Street to Arrad Street, and Myrtle Street, from Hope Street to Sugnall Street, will be closed in preparation for the crane removal work, which will start on Saturday. Those closures will remain in place until 6am on Monday as the fixed tower crane, which has been on site since last May, is removed in stages by 12 articulated lorries. The structure is one of the biggest cranes of its type in Europe and weighs around 750 tonnes. It is being used by Nordic Construction as they continue their work on a purpose built student centre that will include 339 bedrooms, a gym, cinema and bars and restaurants. Roy Bentham, assistant site manager for Nordic Construction, said: “We are in the midst of putting the final preparations in place to close the two roads off. The bigger crane is coming to take down this one and they are going to start it tomorrow.” Source Liverpool The Nordic Construction UK site at Hope Street, Liverpool is a 339 bedroom mixed use development of 10,000 sq m. It includes apartments and accessible studios, complete with fully fitted kitchens and ensuite bathrooms. The volumetric construction system being used is not usually available in the UK – highly insulated, FSC/PEFC certificated timber frame modules which are manufactured and delivered on site fully fitted, decorated to a high standard and ready wired and plumbed for all services. Similar steel frame modules have been used in the UK before, but timber frame systems currently tend to be manufactured in the UK only in separate wall, floor and roof panels rather than full modules.
