Glacial icebergs at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. This site of natural beauty is very popular among tourists. It is breathtakingly beautiful, constantly changing. The icebergs fall off the end of the Jokulsarlon glacier as it melts and float down a channel to the sea where the tide forces them up onto the sand. The blue colour is due to the way the ice has been compressed under extreme pressure over time. The black stripes are layers of volcanic ash and are a record various eruptions. Last year, Iceland reached its millionth visitor. The island has much to offer the tourist including outdoor pursuits such as walking, hiking, mountaineering and climbing, bathing in hot volcanic springs and landscape photography tours. It is also a popular location with film production companies. Icelanders use volcanic boreholes to provide them with hot water and heating for homes and agriculture.
