This illustrariton of a Nereid is based on wall fresco art found in Stabiae, one of several Italian towns south of Rome destroyed in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 The Nereids were part of the Greek pantheon of deities in antiquity, and like many of this pantheon, the Nereids were associated with water, for the Nereids were Greek sea nymphs. Here a Nereid lies on a sea panther in a dining room in a house in Stabiae.
