The Rowan Gorilla V, which stands 557ft, arrived at the Prince Charles Wharf at Dundee harbour for maintenance work. The US-owned rig spent several months in Dundee in 1999 following a multimillion-pound court action between Rowan Drilling and oil company BP Amoco. It remained in Dundee after BP Amoco claimed the rig did not have a complete primary safety system. The Rowan Gorilla V, one of the largest jack-up rigs in the world, is capable of working in seas up to 400ft deep and can drill to a depth of 35,000ft.
