A vendor selling colourful chains of sweets at Bern's onion market (Zweibelmarkt).
A scene from Bern's traditional Onion Market (Zibelemärit Zweibelmarkt). The vendor is selling chains of sweets (called 'ketten') which the buyer will drape around her neck. This market is held on the fourth Monday of November each year the Swiss federal capital Bern. Farmers from the surrounding area bring more than 50 tonnes of onions (artistically woven into plaits) and garlic into town and sell them from stalls. Other stalls offer ceramic pots, bread, vegetables and mementos to the visitor, To help resist the winter cold Glühwein is on sale and cheese, cheesecake, onion cakes, onion soup and garlic bread (chnoblibrot) are on offer from stalls and restaurants, giving off a spicy aroma. The market starts at 5:00h and hundreds of visitors from Switzerland and abroad stream through the town pelting each other with confetti and hitting complete strangers over the head with toy hammers.
