Even then, we travelled like the wind, the dogsat their liveliest gallop, unable to keep the tracesstraight. Suddenly, the iron point of my alpenstockbroke short off, and in a moment the sides of thevalley became a roaring mist, and the poor dogs, 2i8 Northward over the Great Ice howling and yelping, were rolling and boundingthrouorh the air in tow of the shooting sledcre. I did my best to make the end of my alpenstockbite into the snow, and just as everything was becom-ing invisible in our mad rush, I succeeded, with theresult of hurling Matt, who was behind me, over myhead upon the snow in front, and bringing the poordogs up with a thump and a yelp in a breathless massagainst the upstanders.
