Whatever opinions may exist as toMr. Conklings course in this contro-versy, he merits a place of honor inthese pages for the statesmanship whichhe manifested in the previous historyof the nation. Deriving his existencefrom honorable ancestry, he was bornat Albany, N. Y., in 1828. His fatherwas a member of the seventeenth Con-gress, was appointed Minister to Mexico in 1852, and associated judicially with the United Slates districtcourt in the State of New York. Koscoe Conkling was educated for the practice of law, and soonafter entering upon the duties of his profession became prominentas an attorney. The political arena, however, presented a fine fieldfor the exercise of his executive talents and oratory, and about a year. Roscoe Conkling.
