Cumulonimbus with anvil. Heavy, rain-filled cloud of cumulonimbus seen approaching a town. The towering head or \anvil\" of the cloud is seen, with an elongated and flattened top. Cumulonimbus clouds are powered by violent updraughts and reach over 10,000 metres in altitude. When the upward-moving column of air reaches a high layer of moving air, the top of the cloud is drawn into the horizontal \"anvil\" shape. Cumulonimbus clouds are associated with hail, heavy rain and thunderstorms."
