No. 105. 229 The process of distillation is laborious, hat, as already observed,the mechanical arts in this country are not progressively advancing,and, therefore, the Chinese are regardless of the toil, which a littleexertion and ingenuity might obviate. The still is placed in a furnaceof brick work, and the fire so directed that the whole force of theflame may bear on the central parts of the bottom. By this meansmuch saving of fuel is effected, and the economy of the people isshewn here as in the other pursuits of life, it being a maxim amongtbem to let nothing go to loss that can be turned to advantage. Although coal is plentiful in some of the provinces, yet a great dealof it is deficient in that gaseous quality which renders it wood becomes expensive, and is for the most part sold byweight, bringing a price in proportion to its goodness for fuel.
