Products and Engineering Putting Waste Wood to Use Cutting of trees and tearing down of old houses to make room for new construction are everyday occurrences in major cities. Ever wonder what happens to the wood? In most instances it goes to the dump; it is not used. Approximately 20 percent of the material entering landfills in the Southern United States is urban waste wood. Perhaps the saddest chapter in this story is that technological systems for putting this waste wood to use are available, but seldom used. To correct this situation, scientists at the Southeastern Forest Experiment Station called a conference of muncipal and county waste management officials and other interested parties. Attendees were informed about the possibilities of using urban waste wood in the South. Scientists and engineers described the systems that were available. They discussed the technical, financial, and legal barriers to full utihzation of this important supply of wood. Papers presented at the conference were reproduced, and copies were sent to interested people who were unable to attend. Full utihzation of urban waste wood would have several obvious advantages. It would decrease the space cities require for landfills, provide a largely untapped source of energy and fiber, and help reduce our dependence on oil and natural gas for energy.
