A view of Nottingham, England in 1842. The city has links to the legend of Robin Hood and to the lace-making, bicycle ( including Raleigh bikes) and the tobacco industry. It was granted its city charter in 1897, as part of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee celebrations. In Anglo-Saxon times it was known as Tig Guocobauc meaning place or city of caves, later as "Snotingaham" or "Snotingham"; the homestead of Snot's people (Snot was a Saxon chieftain). It was once the centre of a flourishing textile industry.
