29/04/16 Fearless tightrope walker Christopher Bullzini, recreates the daring 100 ft high wire walk, without safety harness or nets, which was originally performed by Carlos Trower, "The African Blondin" at Rudyard Lake, near Leek, in Staffordshire, in 1864 and 1878 as part of a weekend family event A Day at the Lake. Carlos was a nineteenth century showman whose incredible tight rope performances matched the private life he led as a well-paid and well-known black performer and an unconfirmed bigamist husband of two English ladies. He died penniless in a lunatic asylum of syphilis leaving a destitute wife with three children. Christopher, 38, will be performing the spectacular recreation of the tightrope walk over the bank holiday weekend as part of the A Day At The Lake event being held on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, with Sunday being Staffordshire Day and 2016 also being the 20th anniversary of the formation of the Rudyard Lake Trust. He said that recreating this walk will be one of the most exciting moments in his career. “People have an enduring fascination with tightrope walking, which is much safer now with rigging and digital laser technology, but still an incredible physical feat,” he said. “I hope that big public events like this will help to see a resurgence in the interest of telling stories through tightrope walking and circus as a respected performing art form along with theatre, opera, dance as it is elsewhere in the world, in particular France, Canada and Belgium.” More information The tightrope walk will be recreated at 2pm and 7pm daily over the weekend with numerous other family-friendly attractions at the lake.
