Rocky foundations: old houses built of part-rendered stone rubble seem to cling to the precipitous edge of the vertical sandstone cliffs supporting the old town at Tropea, on the western coast of Calabria, Southern Italy, as visitors admire the spectacular scenery below from a nearby belvedere or viewpoint.
Tropea, Calabria, Italy: stone rubble houses with part-rendered walls poised on the edge of the vertical sandstone cliffs supporting the old town of historic Tropea, an ancient settlement said to have been founded by the God Hercules on the Costa degli Dei (Coast of the Gods) in western Calabria. To the right of the buildings, a belvedere offers visitors superb, far-reaching views over the turquoise Tyrrhenian Sea. Below the cliffs, and beyond a strip of lush green vegetation that was once the seabed, they can see Tropea’s iconic civic emblem or symbol, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola, built on the rocky site of an early Christian monastery. On a clear day, lifting their eyes to the horizon may reveal the plume from Stromboli, one of Italy’s three active volcanoes, as well as other Aeolian Islands. Tropea’s old town is a tight-packed mixture of stone-built houses and modern apartments, while the nearby historic centre is filled with former palaces and wayside shrines. As a holiday resort, Tropea is popular with both Italians and Germans. Its reputation was greatly enhanced when it won the 2021 ‘Borgo dei Borghi’ (Village of the Villages) national contest, an annual award for Italy’s most beautiful village.
