WILLIAM CHALFANT, Jr., Banker, wasborn in Unionville, Chester county, Penn-sylvania, January 29, 1858, the son of William andSarah Webb (Marshall) Chalfant. His early edu-cation was obtained in the schools of his nativeplace and at the Pennsylvania State Normal Schoolat West Chester. He subsequently attended thePhillips Academy at Exeter, New Hampshire, where. WILLIAM CHALIAXl, JR. he received preparation for College, entering Har\ardwith the Class of 1882 in the Academic Chalfant did not continue with his Class tograduation, but withdrew to enter upon the studyof law at West Chester, Pennsylvania, in the ofificeof John J. Pinkerton. After two years of applicationto legal studies, his attention and interest weredirected to finance, and he connected himself withthe banking house of T. W. Marshall, with whomhe later formed a partnership. Under the style ofT. W. Marshall & Company, bankers and brokers,he continues in this business to the present 1897 Mr. Chalfant was appointed one of thereceivers of the Chester County Guarantee Trustand Safe Deposit Company of West Chester, Penn- sylvania, a position which he still holds.
