Saint-Gaudens began work on the Shaw Me^morial, for Boston, in 1 8 84, and expected to complete itin a couple of years, but it was not unveiled until Sherman gave him, in 1887, some eighteensittings for the familiar bust, but the equestrian statueerected in New York in 1903 was begun some yearslater, and was long in being carried to completion.
