Climbing tendril-bearing herbaceous or woody vines, with lobed parted or entire alter- nate or rarely opposite leaves, and large showy axillary Howers, on jointed, often bracted peduncles. Calyx-tube cup-shaped or canipanulate, deeply 4-5-lobed, the lobes narrow, imbri- cated in the bud, its throat crowned with a double or triple fringe called the corona. Petals 4 or 5 (rarely none), inserted on the throat of the calyx. Ovary oblong, stalked. Filaments monadelphous in a tube around the stalk of the ovary, separate above; anthers narrow, versa- tile. Fruit a many-seeded berry. Seeds pulpy-arilled, flat, ovate; endosperm fleshy [Flower of the Cross, or Passion, as emblematic of the crucifixion.] About 300 species, mostly natives of tropical America, a few in Asia and Australia. Besides the following, about 7 others occur in the southern and southwestern States. Type species: Passi- flora incarnata L.
