Pulmonary tuberculosis. Chest X-ray of a male patient with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). Tuberculosis is caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacterium, which grows into a primary tubercle (nodular lesion) when inhaled into the lungs. Areas of bacterial infection are seen as opaque areas in the lungs (dark areas). In some people, the disease spreads from the lungs to the lymph nodes. Tuberculosis is transmitted by coughing or sneezing. Symptoms include fever and weight loss, and the disease can be fatal. Treatment is with a course of drugs.
