They lo-cated on Deer Creek, in a grove atthe time occupied by a paity of In-dians, attracted there by the superiorhunting and fishing afforded in thatvicinity. The following winter wasknown as the hard winter, the snow being verydeep and lasting and the weather severely cold; andthe family had to subsist mainly on boiled corn orhominy, and some wild game, for several weeks. Inthe course of time Mr. R. N. Cullom became a prom-inent citizen and was several times elected to theLegislature, both before and after the removal of thecar>ital from Vandalia to Springfield.
