It is on the peaceful and picturesque island of Cheng Chau in the heart of the Hong Kong archipelago that we find Louis To alias "Sugarman". An internationally renowned painter and sculptor, Louis made an astonishing reconversion ten years ago. He wanted to revive a six centuries old Chinese tradition that he had been exposed to during his childhood: handcrafted puffed candy. Thus, after several months of work and experimentation, Louis embarked on a new art form. Like a sculptor, using high quality sugar imported from Germany as his material, he creates small, bright and colourful figurines of fantastic chimeras. "Making sweets is not my job, I'm still an artist. They are like sculptures, you can keep them for at least ten years. ». His small shop where he designs his impressive sweets under the astonished eyes of children and parents has become a major attraction on Cheng Chau Island. Nicknamed "Sugarman" by all, he now enjoys a more popular reputation of which he is proud. "As a contemporary artist, many of my works are now exhibited in museums around the world, but honestly, how many people go there and see them? The sweets I create are admired and also eaten. It's a physical experience of art that remains anchored in the memory. ».
