Codeine opioid molecule. Codeine is used to treat moderate pain, particularly in combination with acetaminophen (paracetamol). The active form is actually morphine, formed from the codeine by the liver. The process is not very efficient, so codeine is a less potent pain-reducer than morphine itself. Nevertheless, codeine is an addictive opiate. Atoms are represented as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (grey), hydrogen (white), oxygen (red) and nitrogen (blue).
