I have found in my experience with delinquent debtors that, while some people do not care what we think of them for not paying their bills, many of t^em are sensitive to publicity and do not want their neighbors or friends to know that they are rated as "unde- sirable ; We operate our busi- ness on the assumption that anyone who buys flowers from us is honest and will pay for them; it is only after we have become convinced that a person is pro- crastinating in the matter of paying his bills beyond a reasonable length of time, that we refuse him credit altogether. Our establishment is located in a strictly residential section of the city; from this it follows that our patronage is largely with families, and our deal- ings are chiefly with the women of the household. We do only a small amount of transient business. It is my opinion that a retail florist located in a good residential section of the city can be more liberal in extending credit than the downtown florist whose business is chiefly with transients. To operate a flourishing retail flower store without incurring a certain per- centage of loss in collections is an im- possibility; therefore, a retail dealer should figure out the approximate amount of commissions he has to pay on his collections, add to that the actual amount of loss from uncollectable ac- counts and then add the sum obtained to the overhead operating expenses, be- cause loss on collections is an expense that cannot be avoided. I have been in business over thirty years, and long ago adopted the rule of giving credit to anyone without question, because ninety- five per cent of our business comes in over the telephone, and it is practically impossible to ascertain, at the moment, any definite credit rating of the person who gives the order. Our losses from uncollectable accounts average only a bare one per cent of our total gross sales.
