The Green Canal (Groenerei) dating back to 1127 in Bruges, Belgium

The Groenerei is one of the most beautiful canals in Bruges, Belgium, and a major tourist attraction. The Green Canal (Groenrei) is a waterway and a street (along the Southern bank) in the very heart of Bruges. It was named after The Green Inn ('t Groene) that stood here during the Middle Ages. Up until recently the assumption was that the Green Canal was not a natural water course, but a man made canal to supply the nearby watermill with water. The understanding today is that it was actually created by nature and further developed by men. From 1127 onwards the Green Canal (Groenerei) was part of the ramparts of Bruges.
