[81] HISTORIC HOMES OF NEW ENGLAND The third son, Colonel Nathaniel Gilman, suc-ceeded his father Colonel Nicholas Gilman, Sr., inthe treasury department — The Continental LoanOffice— as early as 1783. From 1818 to 1824 themansion was occupied by Captain Nathaniel Gil-man, son of Colonel Nathaniel Gilman and grand-son of Colonel Nicholas Gilman, Sr. The house itself is in an excellent state of pres-ervation. The partially panelled walls, the quaintwindows with wide sills, the large and cheerfulfireplaces in which the original dogs still do duty, belong distinctively to colonial days.
