From3 to 5 pounds sown on broadcast will answer for a bedof 1000 square feet. If the weather is very dry and there is no prospect ofrain, dissolve 5 pounds in 100 gallons of water; apply thissolution at night with a watering pot or any other con-venient method. This solution will not be strong enoughto burn the plants; of course more water would be better. It will seldom be necessary to use any treatment onseedUngs under a screen of cheesecloth. TAKING UP SEEDLINGS It almost always pays to loosen the seedlings when takingthem from the seed bed. Do not think you are in such ahurry that you can tear the plants out of the ground, TRANSPLANTING FROM SEED BED TO FIELD 51. 52 LATE CABBAGE especially if it is dry, and then reset them and have themstart quickly. If you destroy most of the root system,it will take a week to get a new one as large as the oneyou destroyed. If the plants to be taken up are in rows, a commonspading fork or manure fork will make a good tool to loosenthem with—simply shove it into the ground beside the rowand pry over on the handle. This method has one objection, that is, it destroys all the plants that are not of suitablesize. (Fig. 13.) A method that is perhaps better, althoughnot quite as rapid, and the one which is used in takingup plants from a seed bed sown broadcast, is to take ascrew-driver and loosen each plant. After a little practicea man will work quite rapidly and the plants will have afine root system left on them. All the small plants willbe left for future use or to sell if the market demands. Some of you will say this method is too fussy; maybeso, but
