1988: Flags fly on the Kutuzovsky Bridge over the Moskva River in front of the Hotel Ukraina in preparation for the May Day celebrations. The Baroque "wedding cake" style building is one of the so-called "Seven Sisters" commissioned by Joseph Stalin as part of a plan to modernize Moscow immediately following World War II. Construction began in 1953 and the Hotel Ukraina opened in 1957.
