While defended by this keep its strengthwas great, and extensive outworks, and bomb-proof casements, wereadded. This imposing condition was not long permitted, the un-settled state of the people and their leaders creating fears in the govern-ment, that the fortresses of the country might become rallying pointsfor the partisans of the league. The castle of Dieppe had, conse-quently, its chief defences levelled, and it now is in a state fit only to* point a moral, and we are sure we may add adorn — a © 87 BOULOGNE. Boulogne is a large and important sea-port of France, in the depart-ment of Pas de Calais. It is composed of two towns — the upper andthe lower. The ancient or upper town, is situated on heights overlookingthe strand, on which are the more modern buildings of Boulogne-sur-Mer. On the approach from the sea, the appearance is of a very im-posing character. The buildings of the lower town or suburbs, whichare surrounded by a lofty wall, have that white and lively character,which distinguishes the ports and other towns of the Continent, fromthose of our own island ; these are surmounted by the more indistinctand sombre mass which is composed of the erections of the old town.
