In Whitby townthere was an old estate which had fal-len into decay and whereon severallarge fir trees grew. He purchaseda number of these trees and had themsquared at a local mill. The basement had to be high, lightand frost proof. For this he built acement base, in some places six feetdeep on which to erect a hollow-tilewall. The services of a local masonv/ere secured to do this tile laying, butall the other basement work, includingcement bases for the posts and the siloand the root-
